Since taking delivery of my Flyer last Jan., it has been one heck of a
NewTek reality check for me. Now that I can at least use my investment in
digital video for my animations and effects somewhat, I am starting to
feel better about my decision to keep with amiga.  I know that an alpha
in in my future for rendering chores but my amigas are comfortable and
work well.  I can't afford the alpha right now or even a pentium.  I was
able to sell off my old 030 based 2000 at a good price and found an older
3000 with an 040 in it for the money.  Even with slower 8-up board memory
I had laying around, in the 3000, I have essentialy doubled my rendering
speed for now.  I will have to sneaker net a hd for geting the frames over
to the toaster machine, but the 030 had rendered so slow that it was not
worth the effort and made my LW SA purchace of little value.

Going to the Video Expo in NY last week was great although the show
really sucked.  I did get a chance to check out all the non-linear
solutions and found that the Flyer was no only the cheapest but the best
out there overall.  the people from Avid have a nice mature interface but
their output has much to be desired.  Their salespeople might have been
knowledgable about exactly the limitations to thier jpeg or mpeg and
realtime effects, but they chose to just try and bullshit me.

Trinity  from play had some nice features but most of the really great
stuff they claimmed was very vaporous.  The Raptor 3 people couldn't
capture more than 5 seconds of my 2 minute demo reel and gave up after
many tries.  that razor sequencing software not only wouldn't woprk worth
a damm but even if it did it was like out of the dark ages compared to
Flyer 4.06!

I did meet two guys there who used lightwave and flyers.  Being an ex New
Yorker myself, it was great to talk Lightwave with people with thick New
York accents.....  BuddaBing...BuddaBoom...

I walked out of there acually happy I bought the flyer for the first time
ever.    The grass isn't always greeener on the other side.
